TRAILS Fernkloof Nature Reserve covers 1 446 ha in the Kleinrivier Mountains above Hermanus and ranges in altitude from 63 to 842 m. It protects coastal and montane fynbos (heath) and a small patch of evergreen forest. Grey rhebok, Cape grysbok and klipspringer are present in small numbers, although these mammals are seldom seen, and 75 bird species have been recorded. Location: South-east of Cape Town, north of Hermanus. Access: From Cape Town follow the N2 for approximately 100 km to Bot River; turn right onto the R43 and follow it to Hermanus. The reserve lies on the northern side of the town. Accommodation: None. Hermanus has hotels; self-catering accommodation and a camping and caravan site. Other facilities: A 35 km network of trails; an information centre. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
